15 Minute Kitchen Sink Hoppy Wheat Tasting and Review

This one comes down to me not liking WB-06 yeast. It leaves a really strong hefeweizen flavor that I just don’t enjoy. The beer on it’s own isn’t bad. It came out exactly how I would expect for an extract brew. Very clear and middle-of-the-road. There’s nothing special going on with this. I’ll make other extract brews in the future. Just not with WB-06.

Brewing an Irish Inspired Red Rye Ale – Tormund’s Finest Ale

This recipe is a combination of several different ones. I started with a standard Irish red ale recipe from BYO Magazine. That gave me a good idea what malt I would be looking for. I knew I wanted to try something other than 2-row or pilsner malt. Settling on Maris Otter I had to figure out how much Rye to add. Bear Republic brews Hop Rod Rye with 18% Rye. I had a target ABV and rough percents. I plugged everything in to the recipe calculator. Made adjustments as needed. The result is Tormund’s Finest Ale.

The hops for this recipe are the ones I had on hand. They are also the ones that will be going into the next All-Grain batch of Highgarden Wit

Sherman’s Planet IPA Tasting and Review – Triticale Recipe from BYO Magazine

I’m very satisfied with the malt profile of this beer. The triticale adds a spicy character to the beer. I am not as happy with the profile of 007 Golden Hops. Bittering with these hops creates a beer that is overly bitter. Cutting back on the bittering addition would help. This would have been better with IBU’s in the 30 – 40 range.

I’m going to brew this one again at some point. Just with a different hop profile.

Northern Brewer Zombie Dirt – Cloning a Clone for 30% less

When I began my home brewing career in August 2017, one of the first beer recipes I heard about was Zombie Dust from 3 Floyds Brewing Co. Back then I was brewing all extract. To say the least, I was rather intimidated by the thought of brewing an all-grain recipe. I looked at several different clone recipes. Beer-N-BBQ by Larry has one. More beer has a kit they call Soulless. I knew about the Northern Brewer Zombie Dirt kit.

By the end of 2017, I had sworn of of kits. The quality of the ingredients I was receiving was questionable at best. The hops weren’t vacuum sealed. Who knew how long those ingredients had been sitting around. I know most places say the kits are “built to order” but I’m not buying it.

A comment on my Upgrading to Partial Mash video in early January 2017 changed my mind. I had a request by Tetman74 to brew Zombie Dirt. I thought about it for a while and came up with the idea to build the kit by myself using their recipe. I knew I could do it cheaper. I picked up some of the grain from Atlantic Brew Supply when I ordered the triticale for the Sherman’s Planet IPA recipe. The Citra Hops came from Yakima Valley Hops. The rest came from my LHBS.

You can view the recipe for yourself over on the Northern Brewer site here.

15 Minute Kitchen Sink Hoppy Wheat Brew Day

Let’s see what happens when I mix together all of the dry malt extract from the beer closet. Will it create something great or become a disaster?
